Is the Future of Healthcare Virtual? Inside the Smart Health and Vitality Lab

At the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam's new Smart Health and Vitality Lab, students practice healthcare skills in a fully virtual environment.
Wearing headsets, they interact with “patients” and each other, with background noise filtered out so they can focus on their tasks. This hands-on experience with advanced VR, AI, and robotics makes practicing skills “more real than working on a mannequin.”

Lab coordinator Jesse Aarden, PhD, emphasizes that while AI has great potential, it must be used with scientific rigor to be effective. This innovative lab on the Health Campus in Southeast Amsterdam allows students to test AI’s role in patient care, bringing them closer to the tech-driven future of healthcare.

For a deeper dive into this transformative project, see the recent article in Het Parool covering the lab’s opening and its potential impact on future healthcare professionals. As Aarden and the HvA team work to bridge AI with compassionate care, the question remains: How will the healthcare field continue evolving with AI at its side? The Smart Health and Vitality Lab offers a promising glimpse into what’s possible.
